XM / SIRIUS Comparison

In comparing XM with SIRIUS satellite radio service, it’s easy to run down a laundry list of features and then decide by adding up those which are in accord with your own interests. One provider has the NFL (SIRIUS), one has MLB (XM). One has Howard Stern (SIRIUS), one has Opie and Anthony (XM). One has an all-gay talk channel (SIRIUS), one has an all-black talk channel (XM). Etc.

Aside from these particular features, however, it seems that XM and SIRIUS offer similar content when it comes to music. A recent article by Marc Fisher of the Washington Post, which can be accessed here via the Charlotte Observer, suggests that potential subscribers who are more interested in bare-bones music content should choose XM, while users who would like to hear a bit more intelligent commentary on music mixed in with the programming should go with SIRIUS.

Personally, I prefer the latter, as knowing the artist and track name of a new song often isn’t enough to satisfy my curiosity. And for those who haven’t heard SIRIUS, don’t assume that its music programming is talk-heavy. All Fisher means is that SIRIUS DJ’s will give you a little more information about the bands they are playing than will XM DJ’s.
