Polk Audio Releases Mega-Device
The world’s first home entertainment system to include a DVD/CD player, an HD radio receiver, and a satellite radio receiver was just shipped out to retailers by Polk Audio. The device is called the I-Sonic and will reportedly sell for around $600 in the US and $720 in Canada. The small size of the device, as well as its auxilliary hook-ups, make it ideal for home or office.
The first units will be available only in Tweeter stores, and supplies are expected to be tight for the next few months. In an attempt to convince the clueless among us that this is not an intentional marketing ploy intended to generate buzz, Polk SVP Dan Hodgson asks consumers to be patient as production is increased in order to meet the overwhelming number of requests that the company has received.
I’m not sure what to think of this device, as I’m not sure whether or not people will be overwhelmingly attracted to the HD-Radio/Satellite Radio (XM, to be specific) combination. Given some of the early reviews of HD radio, I suspect that a significant decrease in price combined with a simple, regular FM tuner may attract more consumers. But as I have yet to experience HD radio, my own personal jury is still out.
