Cox, TiVo Ink DVR Software Deal
A recent agreement between Cox Cable and DVR-mogul TiVo will allow present Cox subscribers to easily adopt TiVo-branded DVR technology. By making its software compatible with Cox-issued DVR boxes, TiVo is making it possible for Cox subscribers to use its technology without having to replace the DVR boxes that they currently use. This means, of course, that there will not be a need for installation visits or appointments. The service is expected to hit the streets around the beginning of 2007.
Cox appears to have pushed for the move as a response to losing subscribers to satellite TV. A recent survey Cox sent out to its non-cable customers asked the following question: “If Cox were to offer digital cable service with a TiVo branded DVR for about the same price as you are currently paying for satellite service each month, how likely would you be to switch from satellite TV to Cox cable that featured this TiVo branded DVR service?” The answer must have been “very likely,” as evidenced by this new agreement.
What does this mean for satellite TV? The Cox-TiVo deal should ultimately level the playing field a bit, albeit not drastically. Aside from the fact that EchoStar is in hotwater regarding DVR technology, DirecTV’s pre-existing contract with TiVo should soften the blow.
