Know Your Satellite Radio Receiver Pt. 2: Sirius SR-H550

Hey everybody. Part 2 of our multi-part series on radio recievers here. Last time we talked about XM’s portable recievers. This week we’ll be doing a complete 180 and discussing Sirius’s home unit the SR-H550.

Sirius’s own home tuner, the SR-H550 offers a few features that differentiate it from 3rd party units. Like most home units, it has 6-line graphic display and parental control/channel lock. The SR-H550 is better suited for home entertainment. According to Sirius, it “creates the perfect ambiance” for any situation from a party to smooching on the couch, but where the SR-H550 really shines is in the sports arena (pun not intended). One nifty feature is a sports alert that let’s you know when your favorite teams are playing at the start of the game, and updates you as the score changes. Not only that, it actually lists your favorite teams’ scores on one screen.

Also, unlike other Sirius home receivers, the SR-H550 has the capacity to record 30 preset channels vs. the 3 or 4 that most of Sirius’s home units allow. If you can’t find anything on your 30 presets, then you can seek by song. The SR-H550 also boasts a sleek, silver casing. It doesn’t connect directly to your home entertainment system like the Kenwood system, but all in all it’s probably Sirius’s most well-rounded home unit, at an atractive $270 price tag.
