XM tops 5 million subscribers

XM Satellite Radio announced today that it has reached the 5 million subscriber mark. This is interesting in a couple ways, not the least of which is XM’s growth rate, which continues to accelerate even after a 30% price hike ($12.95 vs. $9.95). XM is also sticking to their forecast, which predicts six million subscribers by the end of the year. As you can see on this nifty chart, the time its taking XM to reach each next million-subscriber mark is getting shorter and shorter. Meanwhile, Bear Stearns is rating XM to “outperform.”

Competitor Sirius, also rated to outperform by Bear Stearns, currently has 2.1 million subscribers, though I suspect that’s an old enough figure that it should be significantly higher by now.
