Dish Network Offers Free Satellite TV Service to an Entire Town
Number two satellite TV provider Dish Network is willing to give away its service to every resident of a town for 10 years - as long as the town renames itself to “Dish,” or preferably, “DISH.” Until November 1st, the company will accept submissions for the free satellite service, in a move reminiscent of Half.com’s 2000 promotion in which the town of Halfway, Oregon changed its name to Half.com in exchange for $60,000 and 20 computers. Parent company EchoStar estimated that it would cost around $4 million to provide free programming to a town of about 1,000 households.
Meanwhile, EchoStar is also offering another contest in which one lucky winner will have their name written on the next EchoStar satellite to be launched into space, set to blast off next year.
