Motorola and Yahoo v. Satellite Radio
Forget terrestrial radio - XM and Sirius may have a new competitor to worry about. Following Yahoo’s purchase of Pixoria, the company has struck a deal to place its services on new Motorola handheld devices. Yahoo claims it wants to extend its presence beyond computers and into cell phones, homes, and cars. What’s this have to do with satellite radio? Motorola’s iRadio service, which would stream Internet radio broadcasts to a receiver, such as a Motorola cell phone. Yahoo’s role is its Music Unlimited service, 120 channels of pre-programmed, commercial-free music for a cheaper monthly cost than Sirius or XM. The company sees iRadio as a way to attract more subscribers.
